High Court judgement that prevented Natural England from issuing badger-cull licence for “political” reasons was not unlawful

The VAWM is deeply disappointed the High Court has dismissed an application by the NFU for judicial review of the DEFRA’s decision to forbid Natural England from issuing a licence for badger culling in Derbyshire. But the VAWM notes the importance of the grounds of the High Court’s ruling. These grounds do not concern scientific or veterinary validity or advice. They simply recognize the DEFRA’s freedom in law to make political decisions.

The scientific basis for Natural England’s decision to issue the licence remains unchallenged by the DEFRA.
